Lesson Aims:
To enable youth members to correctly identify and name the parts of a Scout cutter that is rigged ready for rowing.

No previous knowledge required.
 
You Will Need:
·         A Scout cutter rigged ready for rowing
·         MEC Common Boat Terms instruction sheet
·         MEC Parts of a Cutter (Hull) instruction sheet
·         A set of Parts of a Cutter (Hull) cards
 
Developing Skills:
Nautical vocabulary, correct use of nautical terms, basic understanding of clinker boat construction, memory.
 
Learning Outcomes:
Consistent use of accurate nautical terms. Correctly identifying and describing parts of a boat’s hull and equipment when rigged ready for rowing.
 
Method:
Using the MEC Parts of a Cutter (Hull) instruction sheet, identify the parts of a Scout cutter’s hull and equipment used for rowing.
Explain the basic principles of clinker boat construction.
Using a set of Parts of a Cutter (Hull) cards, test the youth members’ memory by asking them to identify the named parts of the hull and equipment from a selected card.
Shuffle the cards and then ask youth members to identify the named part from a randomly selected card.
Place the cards face down on the named part, location or piece of equipment of the boat. Get youth members to correctly identify the part or equipment and check their answer by turning over the card.
This lesson can be undertaken:
·         while the boat is on land, or
·         in the boat while underway.
 
Evaluation:
Test an individual’s knowledge of nautical vocabulary and correct use of nautical terms. Sign off the youth member’s record card when 70-80% competent.
